The actual date of this photo is unknown but it features Stead and Simpson's shop to the left which puts it after 1888 and it is before the arrival of the drinking fountain in front of the Market Cross which places it before 1912.
Stead and Simpson was paying rent on the Market Place property in 1888 but the firm's first manager was an Arthur Groom, in May 1903. The drinking fountain was unveiled by Mrs John Wilkinson of "The Oaks" on Thursday, June 20th, 1912.
