The Coronation Bullock of North Walsham
To help raise funds for the Coronation Dinner, butchers Messrs Sewell & Page presented a bullock for, and organised a competition, to judge its weight. Prizes were offered as follows:- 1. A Silver Cup by Mr Frank F. Miles, Jeweller & Optician; 2. A Silver Rose Bowl by Mr John Dixon, Chairman of the UDC.; 3. A Set of Carvers by Messrs T.W.Burton, Ironmongers and 4. A Box of Cigars by Mr. Fred Green, Tobacconist.The competition was won by Mr G.M.Mace whose estimate of 71st. 10lbs was just 1lb above the actual weight. 260 1s. tickets were sold which raised 13 towards the funds.The animal jointed out to give 61 stones of the 200 stones of beef required for the 3,100 people at the Dinner.
